Cosmetic Surgery
What is Cosmetic Surgery?
Cosmetic surgery refers to a group of medical procedures that enhance physical appearance. Cosmetic surgery is performed in order to improve form rather than function. It is differentiated from reconstructive surgery, which is performed to correct deformities, injuries, birth defects, and other problems.
Cosmetic surgery can help combat the signs of aging and can reshape parts of the body that may be of concern to patients. Most areas of the body, including the face, can be treated with cosmetic surgery.
Not all procedures referred to as "cosmetic surgery" require undergoing an operation. Cosmetic surgeons typically offer a number of nonsurgical procedures as well. While the results of these procedures are not usually as dramatic as those associated with surgical procedures, recovery times are often drastically reduced. Many patients opt for these procedures in order to achieve subtle but significant improvement without having to spend much time away from work or social engagements.
Good candidates for cosmetic surgery include people who are in good overall health and have reasonable expectations for their surgical outcome.
What Are the Different Cosmetic Surgery Procedures?
Cosmetic surgeons offer patients a wide range of procedures from which to choose. Sometimes a person who is not a good candidate for one procedure may be able to choose an alternative treatment method. The following list highlights some of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures.
· Breast Enlargement - uses a saline implant to increase the size of a woman's breasts; can also balance unevenly sized breasts
· Breast Reduction - reduces the size of the breast using liposuction and other surgical techniques
· Liposuction - used to remove isolated pockets of fat from specific areas of the body (such as the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, or upper arms); not intended for overall weight loss
· Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) - removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen, tightens underlying muscles; a mini tummy tuck can be done on just the lower abdomen if desired
· Face Lift - removes excess facial skin and tightens underlying muscles for a smoother, younger facial appearance; can also be combined with a neck lift to remove loose skin from the neck and jowls
· Brow Lift - trims excess skin from the forehead, raising the eyebrows and removing wrinkles
· Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) - can be performed on upper and/or lower eyelids to remove excess fat, skin, and tissue; makes tired eyes appear brighter; removes bags and folds
· Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping) - can increase or decrease the size of the nose or reshape the bridge, tip, or nostrils; can be used to straighten a broken or crooked nose; can also be done to improve breathing
· Otoplasty (Ear Pinning) - reduces the size of large ears or moves protruding ears closer to the head; often performed on children between the ages of 5 and 14, although it can also be done on adults
Some cosmetic surgeons perform other procedures as well. If you are interested in cosmetic surgery, consider scheduling a consultation with a qualified cosmetic surgeon to discuss your options.
