Common Skin Treatments |
Advances in cosmetic surgery have helped make skin treatments some of the most popular procedures available today. Everyone wants to make a good impression, which is why so many people are interested in reducing the signs of aging, improving their appearance and increasing personal confidence. Some of the most common skin treatments include procedures to combat fine lines and wrinkles, reduce the impact of sun damage and restore a healthy glow to skin on the face and body. For patients interested in making a dramatic change to their appearance, facial plastic surgery may be the right option.
BOTOX
BOTOX has become one of the most frequently used cosmetic procedures today. BOTOX is the brand name used for a type of bacterium. In large amounts, this bacterium can cause botulism, but doctors discovered that small amounts could be medically and cosmetically beneficial. The procedure was initially used to treat medical conditions such as lazy eye, but has since become an extremely popular treatment for fine lines and wrinkles.
How exactly does BOTOX work? Doctors make a small injection in specific areas of the face, often around the forehead, mouth and eyes. BOTOX works to block signals to these muscles, causing the muscles to relax and to smooth out lines and wrinkles.
Restylane
While BOTOX works to freeze facial muscles, another procedure known as Restylane works by filling the area under wrinkles and lines. Restylane in a clear gel substance that is injected into the skin to help minimize the signs of aging and restore a youthful look to skin. In addition to correcting facial lines, Restylane is often used in lip enhancement procedures and facial contouring.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are another great skin treatment often utilized by people looking for an effective way to treat fine lines, sun damage, freckling and scarring. This treatment is also one of the most popular, with more than one million chemical peels being performed each year.
How does the procedure work? Light chemical peels can be performed in under fifteen minutes and require no anesthesia. Stronger chemical peels that are used to treat deep lines and skin damage may require anesthesia and can take as long as three weeks to heal.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
Individuals with deeper skin damage and wrinkling that a chemical peel cannot treat often opt for one of the newest cosmetic procedures, which is known as laser skin resurfacing. Using laser light, dermatologists are able to treat the skin more deeply and remove more of the signs of aging, including fine lines, light acne scars and sun damage. |
